Humans are social beings. They interact with each other for the basic needs, human relationships, work-life and other aspects. To survive and correlate with each other, physical needs, mental health and stability, emotional needs, psychological aspects, and other factors are necessary. With the rise in technology and services in the modern era, physical health and mental health comes hand in hand. Modern the generation so is the requirement of stability and necessity much associated. What does mental health exactly mean? Well, I’d say mental health is the state of proper consciousness, positivity and positive attitude, presence of mind, and coordination of thoughts and actions.
What contributes to a healthy mind?
A healthy mind is always related to healthy thoughts and healthy surroundings. Distorted environment and personal problems of an individual effect it’s personal growth and development. The positive you are so are your thoughts. A positive attitude not only allows you to concentrate but also allows your mind to coordinate with all the senses efficiently. Negativity only offers self-destruction, withdrawal from daily tasks, laziness and lethargy, unnecessary problems, and lack of interest.
What effects one's mental health?
Many activities and events in one’s own personal life can affect one’s own mental health. This might include
1. Work and personal life imbalance.
2. Death of an individual in a family.
3. Unhealthy or abusive relationships.
4. Economical losses and crises.
5. Facing failures
6. Poor physical health or poor nutrition.
7. Drug abuse.
8. Lack of self-appreciation.
9. Not believing in one’s own worth.
10. Unhealthy human environment.
As we are in the year 2020, apart from the coronavirus crisis, there are many more activities taking place across the world where the people are trying to cope up with the mental health and the situations.
People suffering from chronic mental illness, usually result in experiencing euphoria, hallucinations, isolate themselves from others, excessive usage of drugs, sadness, feeling Lonley, and are in constant fear of being left out.
To overcome these people are often advised to spend time with the loved ones, seeking professional help such as visiting a therapist and undergoing therapy sessions under a professional therapist or seeking help from a mental health advocate. People who are affected by severe drug abuse are introduced to rehabilitation centers and there they are taken care of. Usually, people who don’t feel comfortable with sharing the problems with the family, seek professional help. Otherwise spending time with your loved ones not only heals you mentally but emotionally too. The family makes sure you are taken good care of. Lockdown has helped such people to heal themselves by staying amidst their family members and receiving regular care and nurturing.

Mental health, Quarantine and Corona crisis
Also with respect to the current scenario, as we are amidst a pandemic, people across the globe are quarantined and the lockdown has been imposed in several countries. When we elaborate this with context to our country, people being quarantined at home, most of them are spending the time with the family and loved ones. But stuck inside the house for a very long time, this not only affects an individual’s mental health and stability but also that person starts losing his or her sanity. As most of the people who are stuck inside the house might be under the influence of a toxic relationship or have abusive parents, these people find it difficult to cope up and might end up with harsh conclusions. Domestic violence is prevalent. Also, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and other such destructive thoughts might creep in.
Activities to stay positive during this lockdown:
. To avoid harsh situations, checking upon one’s own mental health is important.
. Checking upon loved ones. Especially friends that are away from the families.
. Checking up on your family and taking care of older members of the family.
. Engage yourself in physical activities. As gyms and other infrastructures are closed temporarily due to lockdown, yoga can be practiced at home. Workout sessions from home can be followed.
. Meditation and asanas are key to absolute concentration.
. Proper nutrition and avoiding junk food is a total yes! And is a good kick-start towards your productive day. As junk food not only adds up unnecessary calories but also is the main reason for laziness and lethargy.
. Practicing and adapting a proper sleep schedule so that we are efficient enough to be productive the very next day.
. Unleashing your inner talents and hobbies such as painting, pottery, writing, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, or learning to play an instrument and building ways to enhance our skills in them.
. Practicing gardening and growing of ornamentals or rearing a kitchen garden can also be done.
. Reading books and listening to your favorite podcasts to build positive energy can also be done.
. Indulging in self-care.
. Decluttering your closet and organizing your workspace, Cleaning your room.
. Connecting with your loved ones via texts, voice calls, and video calls.
. Learning how to cook.
. Spending time with the elders at home. Either by playing board games or cards.
. Pen down your thoughts and views in a journal.
As the above-mentioned activities can be performed to stay sane during these tough times. These activities not only divert your mind but also don’t allow negative thoughts to allow in. Henceforth staying positive during lockdown isn’t difficult!
How to Take Care of Mental health During Lock-down
People such as the front line workers, the armed forces, doctors, and the paramedical staff are working hard every day to fight this pandemic, the responsibility of us civilians is to stay at home and respect the rules of the lockdown. We are all in this together. Seek help from your beloved ones if you are depressed and surrounded by negative thoughts. Sort out your problems with effective conversations. All we wish for is each other’s safety in these tough times.
